Looking Wealthy Isn't the Same as Being Wealthy

July 11, 20263 min read

If I asked you to imagine being wealthy, what would you picture?

A beautiful home?

A luxury car?

Business class flights?

Designer handbags?

For many of us, wealth is something we picture through the things we could buy.

It's hardly surprising. We're surrounded by images that equate success with consumption. Social media, advertising, and even our own conversations often reinforce the idea that wealth is visible.

But over the years, I've realised that this definition is deeply flawed.

The Wealth I Thought I Wanted

Years ago, my family and I lived in San Francisco.

From the outside, our life looked incredibly successful.

We owned two homes—our main home in San Francisco and a holiday home in Lake Tahoe.

We drove luxury cars.

Our children attended private school.

We even had a live-in au pair.

By many people's standards, we looked wealthy.

The reality couldn't have been more different.

We carried over a million dollars of debt between our properties and vehicles. We worked relentlessly to maintain our lifestyle. Stepping away from our careers wasn't really an option because our financial commitments depended on our income.

Like many professionals, we were also wearing "golden handcuffs." Competitive salaries, annual bonuses, and unvested stock incentives made leaving feel financially irresponsible, even when we wanted more time with our family.

At the time, I didn't recognise the trap.

Looking back now, it's obvious.

We weren't wealthy.

We simply looked wealthy.

The Difference Between Income and Wealth

One of the biggest financial misconceptions is believing that a high income automatically creates wealth.

Income can buy a lifestyle.

Wealth creates freedom.

They're not the same thing.

Someone earning a modest income who consistently saves and invests may have more financial security than someone earning several times as much but spending every dollar they earn.

The difference isn't how much comes in.

It's how much stays.

Wealth Is What You Keep

Today, I define wealth very differently.

Wealth isn't measured by what I can afford to spend.

It's measured by what I choose not to spend.

Every pound, dollar, or rand I invest instead of consume has the potential to become an asset that continues working long after I've earned it.

That's a profound shift in thinking.

Instead of asking, "What can I buy?"

I now ask, "How can this money create more choices for my future?"

What Money Can Really Buy

Ironically, investing isn't really about money.

It's about what money makes possible.

It's the freedom to spend more time with family.

It's reducing the stress that comes from large debt repayments.

It's knowing that not every day has to produce income because your investments are contributing too.

It's having options.

That's the kind of wealth I aspire to.

Not because it looks impressive from the outside, but because it creates peace of mind on the inside.

A Different Question

The next time you imagine being wealthy, try asking yourself a different question.

Instead of:

"What would I buy?"

Ask:

"What freedom would wealth give me?"

The answer to that question may completely change the way you think about money.

Because true wealth isn't measured by the things you own.

It's measured by the choices you have, the time you control, and the peace of mind you create.

And that kind of wealth often begins with something surprisingly simple:

Choosing to invest before you spend.
